Senior Operations Manager - Dry Bulk - White Plains, NY
Job Description
The Global Ocean Freight department (GOF) is responsible for overseeing the day to day voyage management of dry bulk vessels. Primary customers include internal ADM counterparts and destinations. The department serves as a liaison between the vessel owner and cargo receivers and handles all aspects of the ocean freight business. The group takes operational responsibility of vessels and cargoes controlled by ADM on a global basis.
The ideal candidate will be engaged in gaining a broad overview of all facets of the ocean freight business. This will include, but is not limited to, working in vessel operations, following the loading and discharge of bulk cargoes, initiating freight payments, claims handling, calculating laytime, and settlement of freight accounts. Additional duties consist of port agency appointments, voyage optimization and performance monitoring, and liaising between various internal departments globally.
As a Senior Operations Manager, the candidate must be able to mentor, develop and implement procedures for a growing team. In addition to day to day activities, the candidate is expected to lead and participate with Global Ocean Freight initiatives and projects, which require risk mitigation, asset management and cost avoidance solutions.
Responsibilities

- Lead and participate in Global Ocean Freight initiatives and projects requiring risk mitigation, asset management and cost avoidance.
- Oversee vessel operations, loading/discharge of bulk cargoes, freight payments, claims handling, laytime calculations, and settlement of freight accounts.
- Manage port agency appointments, voyage optimization, and performance monitoring.
- Coordinate liaison between internal departments globally.
- Distribute Fleet to Vessel operators in the absence of upper management.
- Monitor fleet performance and A global perspective on operational excellence.
Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional communication with internal customers and external brokers/agents.
- Ability to communicate with all levels, including senior management and global destinations.
- Coaching/mentoring trainees and junior operators.
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Problem solving and analytical thinking; independent decision making.
- Willingness for limited night and weekend availability to handle issues.
- Ability to manage 7-10 vessels and execute daily commercial operations.
- Experience implementing and creating SOPs for operational efficiencies.
- Experience handling and settling complex disputes and claims; coordinating complex stow plans with chartering, trade and vessel command; voyage optimization for speed and consumption; monitoring fleet performance; negotiating vendor contracts.
- Project management capabilities on various shipping projects.
- Supervision of fleet compliance with company policy and industry regulations.
- Maritime background and prior sailing experience preferred; 15+ years experience operating dry bulk vessels.
- Experience with voyage management systems (IMOS, Softmar), DA DESK, Sea Cargo Charter, Scope 3 Emission reduction efforts, and bunker purchasing.
- Knowledge of maritime regulations and experience operating multiple commodities.
Compensation and Benefits
- Base pay offered may vary; overtime pay for qualifying hours; eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive plan.
- The pay range for this position is expected to be between $148,000 - $230,700.
- Salary range: >$100,000.
- New hires may be subject to a background check.
